In this era of globalization, international issues cut across essentially all aspects of the APS and physics community.

Science: International R&D collaborations are on the rise; countries are partnering to build big facilities.

Industry:  Companies are increasingly multi-national; US companies are moving R&D facilities offshore.

Education:  The US competes for the world's best talent; it needs to attract and retain first-rate students and scientists.

Policy:  National S&T policies are affected by global events; federal R&D funding influences US participation in international large-scale collaborations.

2010 Beller and Marshak Lectureships

APS is pleased to announce the recipients of the Beller and Marshak Lectureships for 2010. 

Beller Lectureships
•  Joseph Klafter (Tel Aviv University, Israel)
•  Nathalie Picqué (CNRS, France)
Both Klafter and Picqué will present at the APS March Meeting in Portland, Oregon.  Klafter will speak during a session organized by the Topical Group on Statistical and Nonlinear Physics, and Picqué will speak at session organized by the Division of Chemical Physics.

Marshak Lectureship

India-U.S. Travel Grants for Professors & Graduate Students

APS and the Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) have a program to sponsor the exchange of physicists and physics graduate students between India and the United States.  The next application deadline is 31 March 2010.

International Partnerships

Workshop in Ghana

Morning session at meeting in Accra, Ghana.

APS, IOP (UK), and the Kumasi Institute of Technology, Energy and Environment (Ghana), hosted west African scientists, industrialists, and policy makers at a workshop in Accra, Ghana, to develop strategies for biomass energy projects in rural west Africa. 

Defining practical energy strategies is a follow-up project to the World Conference on Physics and Sustainable Development. The purpose of the workshop was to define strategies for the practical application of biomass gasification and bio-oil in rural areas. Attendees participated in small working groups to outline projects to be implemented in 2008-2009.
