Screen Saver Finds StarEinstein@Home Discovers Rare Pulsar The Einstein@Home project uses the idle time from volunteered personal computers to search for gravitational waves and radio signals from spinning neutron stars and pulsars in data from the LIGO gravitational wave detector and the Arecibo radio telescope. Computers belonging to Chris and Helen Colvin of Ames, Iowa, and Daniel Gebhardt of Musikinformatik, Universitaet Mainz, recognized Einstein@Home's first, previously-undiscovered, radio pulsar. APS proposed and helped promote Einstein@Home in 2005 for the World Year of Physics. The project is currently supported by organizations and volunteers world-wide.
